Election day in Milton is less than a week away and the reopening of the Reid Road reservoir in Campbellville has emerged as a key issue.
Dozens of people protested near the town hall in Milton on Saturday afternoon. The site in Campbellville is home to natural resources that could be utilized by the province for the production of high-quality construction materials.
However, residents say the planned extraction practices risk their right to clean drinking water and fresh air.
“It’s like a carrot being dangled in front of us all the time that it’s going to happen soon, you know, expect some news,” said George Minakakis from Action Milton.
For years people in this town have been rallying against the reopening of a quarry, which they say endangers their safety.
“Enough is enough. the premier probably has no plans to stop this,” says Minakakis.
In 2020, Premier Doug Ford committed to quashing the quarry in response to public pushback.

Earlier this month, he appeared less certain, stating that a decision will be made at the end of the environmental assessment.
All of the province’s party leaders and their local candidates have voiced their opposition to the quarry.
Official Opposition Leader, Marit Stiles stated, “I would take it even a step further than simply saying we’re gonna stop the quarry. I think it needs to be rezoned and protected by the province.”
Election day in Milton is on May 2nd with the polls projecting a close contest.
New numbers released Friday suggest liberal candidate Naidoo Harris is in the lead with 41 per cent of the vote, while PC candidate Zee Hamid sits at 39 per cent.
Organizers said both the premier and Hamid were invited to the rally but declined to attend.
