A nine-year-old boy is in hospital in Hamilton Sunday night after being pulled out of a burning house with no sign of life.
Fire officials say the boy was “vital signs absent” when he was rescued by firefighters.
The fire department said they got the call at about 1:45 a.m. to a fire in a townhouse on Towercrest Drive.
They say they faced smoke and flames when they got there. Neighbours alerted the fire department that a child may be inside.
“Crews very quickly made their way to all floors doing a primary search to look for the child. The child was found on the upper floor by firefighters, vital signs absent, and quickly removed to the exterior. Firefighters immediately initiated lifesaving measures and were able to revive the child,” says Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe.

A neighbours says, “They crashed in the door and more fire came and it wasn’t long before they brought a small boy out, young boy, what was he, nine years old, and they had him right here on the ground working hard to resuscitate him.”
Police said they believe there’s nothing criminal involved. The fire marshall’s office also said it was going to take time to determine the cause of this fire.
They also say smoke detectors in the house were working, as the fire chief warns again that this is a dangerous time of year for fires.
The damage from this fire is put at about $350,000. As of Sunday afternoon, there is no further word on the condition of the boy who’s in the hospital.
